I’m not big on apps. Most of them are designed to steal an hour without you noticing. But there are five I keep coming back to, and they’ve earned their spot on my home screen. Nothing fancy here, just the tools that quietly make my days better.
Insight Timer
This is the one I open almost every morning. I use it for meditation, but also for the frequency music, the low hums and tones that some people write off as woo and I’ve just come to trust. I don’t need to explain or defend it. It works for me, and that’s enough. Some mornings it’s ten minutes of silence with a timer. Other days it’s an hour of ambient tones while I read or write. Either way, it’s the first thing that sets the tone for everything after.
The Camera
Not a specific app, just the camera itself. I take a lot of photos, not for anyone else, just to remember what a place or a moment actually looked like before my memory smooths it over. It’s become a habit that costs nothing and pays off later, every time.
ClassPass
Movement is one of the four pillars of this site, and ClassPass is how I keep it varied instead of routine. I don’t want to do the same workout every week. This lets me drop into a Ypga class one day and a golf one the next, without committing to a membership I’ll outgrow in a month. It fits how I actually want to move through a week.
Simple as it gets. This is how I stay in touch with the people who matter, especially the ones scattered across different countries. No algorithm, no feed, just messages back and forth. In a world of apps competing for my attention, I appreciate one that’s just trying to help me talk to people I care about.
YouTube
I go here for two things: research and unwinding. One minute I’m watching a deep dive on Everest Base Camp logistics, the next I’m watching something completely unrelated just to switch my brain off. It’s the app I have the most mixed feelings about, because it can eat time if I let it, but used with intention it’s useful.
That’s the list. Not glamorous, not curated for anyone else’s approval. Just the five that have stuck around because they actually serve the way I want to live.
